Astrology

There are so many sections (methods) used in Astrology for characteristic readings or predictions. A few of them are

  • Birth Chart
  • Periods
  • Transits (Gochara)

Birth Chart

There are twelve star clusters called signs. Each sign represents 30 degrees of the sky. The birth sign of a person is the 30-degree cluster, which is at east at his time of birth. That sign will be considered as that person’s 1st house, which is called Ascendant. From that sign onwards the other signs will be the other houses respectively (from 2nd to 12th). Even though most of us assume that each house covers exactly 30 degrees, there are methods used , to calculate the size of each house (which can be used if you prefer), which will give different values for different persons.

The position of each planet (there are 12 planets including Dragon’s head and Dragon’s tail) will be calculated carefully at least to the last degree. The absolute position as well as the relative position (in which house the planet is and how many degrees the planet has travelled in that house) will be calculated and the birth chart will be drawn accordingly.

If we take the position of each planet in degrees alone (most astrologers may say that even the minutes and seconds are important!), there are 360 different values for each planet. So there are 36012 different variations for absolute positions. In addition to this there are 36012 different variations for relative positions. Now there are 36012 x
36012 different variations. (That is 2.24523×1037 combinations which is equal to 2.24523×1031 millions of combinations!) There is another important calculation in astrology. That is the angle between any two planets, which is called aspects. If the angle is one of the important set values defined in Astrology (00, 900, 600, 450, 300 etc.), the characteristics are defined. So mathematically there are billions and billions of different birth charts.

Any astrologer who is not that particular about the exact position of any planet in degrees, may say that what he wants is the Absolute and Relative star cluster, which any planet is in. Then for any planet there are 12 possible absolute positions and 12 possible relative positions. There are 12 planets and 12 ascendants. So there are 12x12x12x12 (=20736) combinations. In additions there are angle between any two planets (aspects), so many specific planetary combinations and so on. (B. V. Raman’s 100 Yoga book will explain 100 very important planetary combinations.) So even in this ‘not so accurate’ method will also go up to at least a million different combinations.

Example :

To get a clear idea of this, we will take an example. First we will cast (prepare) the birth chart of a person who was born on 30th March 1955 at 7.29pm in Colombo (Longitude: 790 52′ East, Latitude: 60 55 north of equator). If we use the “ASTRO” software, we will get the following results. If you are not that particular about the exact position, you have to consider only the first two columns.

1st House starts at 270 28′ Libra. If you assume that all the houses are equal and cover 30 degrees, the details of the houses are as follows. The table in the right side will give the house without mentioning the start and finish

If you consider only the star cluster, 1st house is Libra and Neptune is in Libra. But if you consider the start and finish positions, 1st house starts at 270 26′ Libra and Neptune is at 270 20′ Libra. Therefore Neptune is just 6′ before 1st house (i.e. 12th house.) Now considering the start and finish of the houses as well as the exact position of the planets, we will draw the chart, according to Sri Lankan style. (There are different styles of drawing the birth chart).

If you consider only the star cluster of the houses as well as that of the planets, chart will be as follows.

Anyway we will just study chart 1.

In chart 1, Saturn is in Scorpio and Saturn is in House 1. When we give characteristics or predictions, we have to consider both these factors. In addition to that, while Saturn is in House 1, Mars in House 1 will give one result and Mars in House 2 will give another result. In this chart, Mars is in House 7. So the result will be the resultant of all these positions. To give a very accurate reading, we have to consider all these things as a whole, not separately. (The reason is while one planet is giving positive effect, another planet may give a negative effect.) The existing software will give details considering these things separately. So you will not get the feeling of “one million combinations”.

If you calculate the size of each house using a specific calculation (Koch houses), you will get the following results.

Due to this method of calculations, the border line cases may defer. So you will get entirely a different set of statements as characteristics.

Anyway these charts show the exact physical position of the planets. When we as Sri Lankans, calculate, we deduct a value called Ayanamsa, from all the positions as well as from the house positions. The Ayanamsa for the year 1955 is about 23 degrees. After deducting that value, you can redraw the chart. The planetary positions and the houses will be as follows.

Without considering the exact positions, just taking the star cluster alone in to account, if we draw the chart, it will be as follows.

In addition to the planetary positions, if we consider the planetary combinations, there may be some more things to be added to characteristic reading. For an example, If Saturn being exalted (positioned in Libra) or in his own house (positioned in Capricorn or Aquarius), is positioned in either 1,4,7,10 or 1,5,9 house then there is a “yoga” called “Sasa Yoga” which has very specific features. This has that particular combination. Similarly, if Mars being exalted (positioned in Capricorn) or in his own house (positioned in Aries or Scorpio), is positioned in either 1,4,7,10 or 1,5,9 house then there is a “yoga” called “Ruchaka Yoga” which has very specific features. This has that particular combination too. (As we have mentioned, in Dr. B. V. Raman’s “100 yoga” book, there are details of 100 very important such combinations.

Astrological Software

There are programs developed to cast the horoscope and give predictions or characteristic readings (mainly the latter). Even though the absolute position of any given planet, and the relative position of it should be combined in predictions as well as the aspects!), most of these software (all what we have seen) give different sets of characteristic details for absolute and relative positions separately, and for aspects as well. But they were not combined. Due to this reason, one may think the meaning of ‘millions of combinations’.

Periods

In addition to the exact positions of each planet at the time of birth, there is another important section in Eastern Astrology called periods. There are 9 major periods for each planet and they have different durations. Each major period is proportionately divided into 9 sub periods and each sub is divided into 9 sub-sub and so on. Depending on the exact position of Moon at the time of birth, there is a method of calculation to find out what the major period the person is undergoing and what is the amount remaining. In short other than the planetary positions at the birth time you have to consider another concept (which has so many possibilities) for predictions.

Transits

In addition to the above, you have to calculate the current position of each planet, which has a very big impact on what really happens to any human being. There again you have billions and billions of combinations as in the birth chart.

Other Calculations

There are so many other methods of calculations (specially in the East), which will make the case easier for predictions. They are Sahama (Sensitive points in your chart), Ashtaka warga (Using zeros and ones giving weightings to each house) and so on.

Different Sectors

Other than the different methods of calculations, there are sectors, which will define the birth chart differently. Mainly there are two called Sayana (with Ayanamsha) and Nirayana (without Ayanamsha). Western countries use the former method where the exact physical planetary position is considered. India and the East use the latter method, where a corrected position (by deducting a value called Ayanamsha from the exact position) is considered.

Limitations

A person (an Astrologer) who reads a birth chart has to either remember qualities of millions of combinations or refer hundreds of books. Unfortunately to our knowledge, even though the above two things happen, a big percentage is given for intuition. If we look at it as a method of reading a chart, it is fantastic. But if we look at it to analyse the theory statistically, it doesn’t have any logic at all!

Conclusion

We cannot say that Astrology is inaccurate. But since there are billions and billions of combinations, it will be very difficult use it as the base for any kind of statistical study.
